When it comes to the history of the British Gold Sovereign, there is a very extensive and rich past. The Gold Sovereign is a gold coin that was first used in the 1400’s by Henry VII. The weight of this coin has been reduced over the years to the final 22 carats which is the gold standard.

Sovereigns were replaced in the early 1600’s by the Unites, but production began again in the 1800’s and then once again minted. The gold from these coins have been melted down and used in a variety of other ways. The estimate is that this coin can be circulated for around 15 years before the weight drops and it is not considered legal tender.

Many counterfeits were attempted with the British Gold Sovereign and the gold was long sought after by thieves that have very creative ways of siphoning the gold and replacing it with other metals. There are also many counterfeit coins out there that were once in circulation. There is an estimate that a small number of the coins that are being bought and sold are indeed counterfeit and this is why you need to familiarize yourself with the impersonations and how to indentify them.
